Bluetooth
technology was originally developed to connect and synchronize
devices in a short-range personal area network (10 meters) over
a Piconet. In a Piconet one Bluetooth Device is designed as a
master device allowing an exchange of information through itself
to all the devices in the networked Piconet. Multiple Piconets
are known as Scatternets and
if one thinks about it for a while it becomes apparent that the communication potential of a Bluetooth Device is far less limited than the 10 meter range of the technology itself. For instance it is entirely possible that Bluetooth may replace the majority of the wires now used to connect your PC to a variety of peripherals in the future. Bluetooth Technology offers the promise of connecting devices over short distances without the limitations of need of the line of sight, speed problems or reliability seen with infrared devices. Mobile phone use for instance is expected to grow at a 35% annualized rate over the next three years. By then nearly every Cell phone manufacturer is expected to have Internet access and the potential for numerous devices to be wired (wirelessly!) to your phone. Bluetooth short-range wireless technology is expected to enable any information device to link to each other at a maximum speed of 721 Kbps using its frequency hopping spread spectrum technology. Frost & Sullivan believes that the anticipated ubiquity of Wireless LAN and Bluetooth-embedded systems will stimulate a giant leap in overall revenues from $92.3 million in 1999 to $53.12 billion in 2006. Some of the clear-cut winners in this group will be Bluetooth Chipmakers like BRCM, CNXT, NSM and STM but there will be many others. |
